Alternate Methods / Code Equivalency

Unique designs require innovative fire protection engineering solutions. Applying the science and engineering of fire protection and life safety systems in buildings, affords you more design options. This is accomplished by taking into account the specific characteristics of the building under consideration, rather than applying generic "boilerplate" requirements found in prescriptive building and fire codes. This is generally achieved via "equivalencies" or "alternate methods". In the US, most buildings are still designed under prescriptive building codes based on the International Code Council (ICC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

"Applying the science of fire protection engineering to life safety systems in buildings, affords you more design options"

Code equivalency differs from prescriptive design in that designers can use alternative solutions as long as they meet the stated goal of the performance-based code. The goal of a performance-based code is usually very broad and differs from prescriptive codes which spell out exactly what steps should be taken to reach the final objective. Although the International Codes (IBC, IFC, IMC, etc.) are largely prescriptive in nature, IBC 104.11 Alternative Materials, Design and Methods of Construction and Equipment allows for performance based fire design as long it is approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. In addition, the NFPA has begun to include performance-based options in several of its prescriptive codes.

Do you have a unique design constraint that doesn't fit in the black-and-white of the prescriptive code? Allen Engineering can provide engineering solutions that will ensure that it complies with the intent of the provisions of the code.
